I assume that your uni has a firewall in place to prtect its netowkr from nasty types on that there internet? If so they will probably have restricted the ports that can go through the firewall.

I seem to remember that port 6667 is the default IRC one. So you need to find out from your network ops dude if this is allowed through your firewall, cos if it isn't you ain't gonna be able to chat.

Name resolution to your IRC server might be a problem in that your Uni machines probably resolve against local DNS and then let, say, a proxy resolve against an Internet present DNS server on your behalf for web browsing. So you might have to manaully resolve the IP address of the IRC server and whack that into your IRC client.

irc.quakenet.org has a server on 62.79.27.107 i think.

If all that fails you might want to see if there are any web based IRC services around that relay the IRC chat to the web server and then bung it down to a browser client over port 80. Never tried it, never looked but it is the kind of weird stuff some student in poland might knock up.

Was this the kind of info you were after?
