e-books

i received an e-book reader fro christmas and have only occasionally used it since then. I am currently reading Reality Dysfunction by Peter F. Hamilton on it and two things spring out at me - the e book is a lot less cumbersome than the 1000 page book, but on the other hand i feel it is strange not knowing by feel how far i am through a book - according to page numbers i'm half way through, but i realise i actaully prefer seeing i'm half way through how many pages are left!!

anyone else with an e-book reader and thoughts about whether it could take over form the old ink and paper!

Re: e-books

I like having real books personally. I don't think I would like the feeling of browsing through files for yet another reason. I'm already doing it for videos and songs, I think I just prefer the feeling of having a collection of books on the shelf to look through for the one I want.

Re: e-books

I'm with DA on this one, I prefer a hard copy of a book over a digital one anytime. But then I like physical version of everything wherever possible.

Re: e-books

I bought a ereader through work for a mate and before I sat and used it i would have said i was that fussed but i can see the appeal now, just the thought of all my books on one thing...

Re: e-books

what i love about the e-reader is that i can buy more books - my house is full of bookshelves that are full of books and my garage has boxes of books so my wife was reluctant for me to buy even more books - now i can have 20 books on something the size of a slim volume of poetry! i can also carry lots of books with me on holiday (i did use to sacrifice clothing space for my books and rely on washing stuff in the sink!).

however - i've got to admit i prefer real books and still sneak in a few when my wife is not looking - the pile on my bedside table is suspiciously higher than it was a couple of weeks ago!

Re: e-books

I would love an e-book reader there's nothing more annoying than when I'm programming with a book in front of my for reference than the page turning on me. Or having to screw up the book by folding the page.

Just something for the future I guess when prices inevitably fall and more books are available that aren't fiction books

Well presumably it wouldn't be difficult to back up the ebooks and the reader should be covered on your house insurance.

i download everything to my pc first then transfer from pc to e-book - i also tend to back up stuff on my external hard drive just in case. the e-book reader is indeed covered by house insurance - but i would still be gutted if i lost it!

Re: e-books

I think that e-readers are going to get much more popular in the next few years. Just like there are plenty of people out there who aren't bothered about owning a cd or record and will just get the mp3, i think books will in the same way for the masses.

However, just like vinyl i think there will be a market for the printed word for many years to come. I, like many of you,am someone who likes to own a book.. That said, there are many positives to these digital readers, just not enough for me to get one yet...

It's a damn site easier and cheaper to replace than a book collection that goes up in flames...

Re: e-books

I bought my girl friend a sony one for xmas. tbh she's not even used it and still reads paper books.

The sony one she has tells you how many pages you have left to read at the bottom

Re: e-books

the e readers take a bit of getting into - my problem was impulse buying of books whilst shopping for other stuff. i have sort of overcome this by taking the book up to the counter and asking if there is an e-book equilavent of it. if there isn't then i'll buy the paper coipy, otherwise i'll just wait til i get home and download it (and more beside - so doesn't save me money in the long run )

I wanted to buy my girlfriend such a thing for her birthday but I've decided to ask if she likes it before I did. Thanks God, I didn't buy it because she got absolutely crazy. She told that only freaks need e-books and she wants to keep her old paper books. Phew! As for me - e-books are cool.

Re: e-books

Ebooks don't have the book smell. I'm a geek, but there's no way i'm putting my paper books away to read them on an (what is just an) ipod...

No book smell, no lovely old book feel... Damn you heathens, just got and burn our libraries why don't you!?

I still have vinyl, and I always buy cds :/

I defy anyone to go into an old book store, open a big book, take a big sniff. Now tell me that ebooks are good, eh¬!?

Re: e-books

as much as i like the old book smell and as much as i would love to live in a castle with acres of bookshelves and as much as i love real books - the most important thing is the stories written inside them and if i can double the amount of books (stories) i have - probably currently close 500 - without having to a much bigger house by having e-books then i reckon that is a good thing!

libraries are all well and good but they often don't have the books i want to read and i'm not keen on the added pressure of return dates

Re: e-books

I have e-book software on my phone (HTC Hero) so I am currently reading some classics on that, but I only use that when I havn't got the paper book I'm reading at the time e.g Bus Stop, waiting to pick my brother up from school etc.

It's much better for reading at night, as I don't need a light on

I use Wattpad reader,it fetches content from their own site. So it's not for offline ebook reading usage.
