Mother trailed by policeman and warned by council for telling off son at checkout
I'm having a kid soon and also believe that smacking your kid makes them behave. I was smacked when i was a kid and it sorted me out

Re: Mother trailed by policeman and warned by council for telling off son at checkout
I'm the same. I was smacked (on the arm / leg, never the face) when I was naughty and I've turned out as a well grounded, young man (or so I think). Didn't beat the shock of seeing a Spanish mother wallop her kid across the face in Barcelona Airport though, that was pretty intense.
Then again, that is the Daily Fail and I wouldn't believe anything in it.

Im in the camp of 'a quick slap on the leg does no harm and is probably a good thing'.
Seems those of us brought up in this way are all fairly well rounded individuals.
Too much cotton wool wrapping of kids these days IMO.

This. If kids were given proper discipline the we would have kids respecting others rather than being little ****s and carrying weapons.

Re: Mother trailed by policeman and warned by council for telling off son at checkout
This may cause a debate....But it all comes down to PARENTING. I have never hit my kids, and never will.
I was hit like most kids in the 70's for misbehaving, and it is one of the few things I remember in my childhood, especially being hit for something I didn't do.
Mum was a single parent and brought all 3 of us up the best she could. To reflect, our neighbour at the time had 2 children, we were best of friends and I also saw the discipline they had from both parents, the smack and shouting for being naughty, however one of them is a prolific criminal currently behind bars, and I'm sure many of us and quote similar stories.
I am not a do goody Liberal who looks through the world with rose tinted glasses, I have seen both sides of children who have no discipline to children that have lost their lives through too much discipline.
There's no rule book on parenting, but if you have to resort to violence to make your kids behave, then you need a good long look in the mirror and ask why?

^^But I read that and think "so one out of five turned out to be a criminal".... that's not a bad turnout
I fully believe a slap is a fine form of discipline. Now it's all that "you've made me unhappy" politically correct nonsense.
I was hit if I really misbehaved, and as such I learned pretty quick to just... well, not misbehave. As such I only really remember being hit a few times... once when I hit my sis, once when I lied, and can't really remember the other time. It sure stopped me doing it.

Yeah, I agree with this. It's wasn't a repetitive beating, it rarely happened. My occasions were:
- When I stole a firetruck toy from the local Library.
- When I broke mum's prize plant stand.
- When I swore for the first time.
If that didn't work, Mum would threaten telling Dad. That was enough to stop me in my tracks. Rarely came to that, and he wouldn't do anything to me. Just knowing he knew was enough fear.

Re: Mother trailed by policeman and warned by council for telling off son at checkout
I was never hit for swearing - my mum didn't find out I swore 'til I was like 15
I was always told I'd be hit if I hit someone, if I lied, or if I stole anything. I was never hit for breaking anything - I've never deliberately destroyed something, and she'd never have hit me for an accident.

Hehe, I did ask her what a C-unit was at the age of 8 I think...
I did deserve the hitting for the accident, I being an idiot and was using it as a racing post to run around...

With respect that's a bit simplistic and a bit misleading.
We're not talking about violence here. Nobody in their right mind would think that beating a child is the right thing to do but a sharp attention getting smack on the back of the hand or on the bottom does no harm and reinforces in the childs mind that their behaviour has been unacceptable.

"Misleading" is a polite way of putting it. It's rather disrespectful to act so flippantly and "holier than thou" towards other parents, I'd reckon.

Theres a big difference between beating a child and a once or twice a year slap.
Parents these days let kids get away with murder, this is clear from even a simple trip to the supermarket you see kids sitting in trolly's (outside of the child seat), kids standing in trolly's (in the place where you are placing your shopping), while their parents push them casually. There are plenty of incidents at supermarkets daily that could hurt (even seriously) a child. If my or my brother tried any of that we would get told off, if we persisted a smack. Naturally we never bothered to even try.
And these parents letting their kids do this would naturally be the first one suing companies like Tesco should their kid get hurt for being sat in a trolly that isn't even equipt for a child seat nevermind about a 7 or 8 year old.
