Re: Tyres - where to buy online
thx all for input, got some good sources on the spreadsheet for future use!
In the end, with help from Alpina we made contact with a B5 owner who was selling official Alpina exact spec wheels and winter tyres for a decent price in Germany. They are 18x8" on all corners, the minimum physically and legally permissible! Smaller wouldn't work due to the truck sized discs and calipers!
Picked them up yesterday and had them fitted today... so far perfect. Looking forward to trying them on a snowy car park next time it snows to get a feel for the rubber/handling.
The wheels and tyres are as new, but the tyres were made in 2004 and never used. So there is a concern that the rubber might be to dry for 100% proper snow/ice/wet traction. They are still about the best money can buy so, I have high hopes for at least 1 winter and summer from the tyres.
Time will tell.
I amounted a fair chunk of knowledge about mid range and high performance 18" and 19" summer and winter tyres, so if anyone needs to double check something on this topic, just shoot me a question and I'll be as helpful as I can.
For the record, it basically makes no sense to try and buy >=19" winter tyres. It is super expensive and also the wider the tyre the worse it will perform in very wet and snow conditions. At 19" the choice of tyre starts to get very thin too. Where possible I'd always recommend having a set of winter rims as small as physically and legally permissible, tyre choice and price gets better as you reduce the dimensions.
